About

My name is Mikayla! I'm a 22 year old University Graduate with a passion for all things beauty. I stumbled into the online beauty community a year ago and have been obsessed with youtube videos and blogs ever since. After watching hundreds of videos over the past year I figured it was about time I joined the community and posted my own thoughts in my own little space. I'm also recently graduated, unemployed and headed for college in September.

I really enjoy all things beauty, and I really like telling my friends what I think about products so writing them down just felt natural. To me, make up isn't something that you wear to make yourself look prettier, it's something you do on yourself for yourself. It has the power to give you strength to tackle a rough day, the courage to find your inner confidence and sparkle like every girl is meant too.

Other than beauty, I love fashion. Beauty and Fashion are the keys to my heart, along with a great deal. I'm all about a decent deal, and budget shopping is my favourite.

I can't wait to start this journey with the internet and all of you!

A Work In Progress

Wednesday 27 May 2015

I first discovered Connor Franta a little over a year ago, through Sawyer Hartman's channel on youtube, where they had watched inappropriate viral videos if you enjoy that humour and haven't seen it- do it. And found myself watching his videos for hours quite often. His amazing editing skills and laid back style were easy to fall into.

When I heard he was coming out with a book I knew I wanted to read it, because I am genuinely interested in what he has to say, and following his social media his tumblr is a thing of beauty I've found some of my favourite music. The trouble is I live in Canada, and for some weird reason it takes forever for anything to make its way here. Then today yes I'm reviewing a book I bought today I was walking around the book section of Walmart and grabbed it instantly. When I got home I put my headphones in, grabbed an iced tea and started reading fast forward 2 hours and I was finishing the book.

First, it's the best book I've read in a while.  I have always been a book worm and loved reading but after 5 years of post-secondary school I've struggled to enjoy reading School has ruined reading for me I relate a lot more to the written word then I do almost anything else.

If you have seen Connor's videos before his writing style is very similar to his videos, sometimes a little sidetracked, sarcastic, and truthful. He tells the story of a small town boy who faced a lot of pressure from himself to "fit in" and live within the labels he had been 'assigned' by his peers.

As the book progresses, he gets into more deeper aspects of his life, always thinking he was different, the struggles of being a teenager, trying to figure out who he is, but it is so well put that it makes you think of your own childhood and some of your own struggles during those sometimes traumatic teen years. The whole memoir is light hearted and honest.

He talks about how difficult it is to explain to people what it is he does older people don't really get youtube and how over the course of a couple years he found himself with 4 million subscribers who watch his 5 minute videos every monday, and how insane that this is his career. Sprinkled within the pages of sarcasm and honesty and deep stuff, are pictures he has taken, stemming from the introduction where he talks of his discovery of his love of cameras and videos. He has a page dedicated to why he sometimes frequently has his arm in pictures.

I thought I related to Connor before reading this book and after reading this book I feel like he has allowed those who watch his videos to know him a little better, and feel they can relate to him even more.

He ends the book absolutely perfectly for someone whose memoir has been written at the age of 22 and titled "A Work in Progress" and who is encouraging other young people to chase their own dreams. "So what are you waiting for? Go. Get started" (page 209)
